Availability-The forgotten quality
A few years ago, I was in one of many character building meetings at work. Part of the meeting everyone had to go around the table and give their best qualities and what we wanted to improve upon. “I am ambitious, determined, and loyal,” said one coworker. Another said, “I am ambitious, intelligent, and resilient.” When it was my turn, I simply responded by saying, “I am available.” The perplexed look on everyone faces certainly did not come as a surprise. “Available?” “What do you mean you’re single?” Everyone laughed. “Available is a quality?” “Yes it should be,” I said. I went on to explain how availability sets the foundation to become more reliable.
To explain further, in reliability theory and reliability engineering, the term availability has the following meanings: The degree to which a system, subsystem or equipment is in a specified operable and committable state at the start of a mission, when the mission is called for at an unknown or random time-PHEW! That’s a mouthful! Lol but simply stated one must just remain in ready status. One of the dictionary definitions is; able to be used or obtained; This is indeed a quality in itself.
Why is it important for people to be available?
Perhaps it could be because it is important to be reliable and be able to think on your feet at all times. A good example of this would be a doctor in an emergency situation or a soldier responding to the call of duty. The best example is in where being available means that the body is like a vessel to be used by God. This means a person is open and available whenever he needs them to deliver a message or to carry out his plan. In my opinion, this is where being available matters the most. You may not possess the abilities you think you need to accomplish your goals but if you remain available, you will.
Be receptive and committed
Availability can be applied to most situations where optimum performance requires a person to not be easily distracted. Essentially, being available means to be receptive and committed being able to take on a task at any given moment. Ultimately, availability sets the foundation for you to accomplish greatness.
